Ok, but not 5 star, 3 at best

Definitely not 5 star. This place is 3 star at best. However, the location is beautiful and most of the staff are great. We had a great time, but don't expect luxury. You have to book for the restaurants, which is an added hassle otherwise it's the buffet. The food is average at best.

    Great time

My only problem that I had with my stay is that the room had an odor. Other than that we had a great time but I feel that guanacaste riu more dedicated for kids than adults because most of the shows was for kids. If or when I visit again we will most definitely stay at riu palace.

    One of the worst experiences..

One of the worst experiences.. - Security is a BIG problem. Thieves among the staff. One employee was caught stealing in a guest's room that was marked do not disturb, he was dragged to security and was sent home for the day. FOR THE DAY and allowed to return to work the next day. - Food was subpar ..like cruise food. Restaurants do not have enough available spots so you end up having to go the buffet most of the time. - I went with a large group and one of my party members did not have power in their room for 3 days. - Food at the meal areas were barely covered and flies every where. - A lot of bees in the pool area - Had a bday party at the site, the food that was catered was undercooked and they refused to serve the cake they baked for us. -The water in the rooms have a horrible sewer smell, which makes the room smell crappy. - Showers are like a cave with no lighting. - Rooms were not properly cleaned. - When you have complaints don't bother going to management, they will only ask you to comeback later.

Excelent holiday but a one off for us

I recommend learning a bit of Spanish. The locals were very appreciative, even if we could only say and understand a few words. It also made the holiday more enjoyable to be able to understand our surroundings. ⁃ First impressions were Wow, this is huge! Once you got to know where things were it seemed less so, but by far the biggest resort we'd stayed in with it's 5 restaurants (4 themed & 1 buffet) and 5 bars there's plenty of choice. Nice spa and we were entitled to an hour in the jacuzzi each day. A conference centre which we didn't go in, stage, pools & little water park, plus its right on the beach. ⁃ Withdraw money at the airport! It might be the last time you see as cashpoint. The nearest one is Coco Beach, nothing in the hotel and the taxi fare is pretty expensive at 18 US$ return. We went since we had no cash. We spent all afternoon there, since you can buy souvenirs here too. Not a lot else at Coco beach other than souvenirs in fact. ⁃ Also expensive is the on site gift shop. Make sure you take plenty of sun cream as you do not want to be buying it there. ⁃ You might be glad of a hat with a drawstring. We used ours very often, including under helmets, in the pool/sea and on boats. It can occasionally get quite windy, and it was always very hot. ⁃ We avoided the pool between 10am and 4pm because at these times, the UV index is particularly high (it went up to 13, on a scale of 15), we got burnt during these hours, even with sunscreen. After 4pm, we stopped wearing sunscreen and never got burnt, thankfully 🙂. It’s definitely worth checking the UV index on your weather app, as it’s more relevant than the temperature (with regards to sunburns). ⁃ That said the lower pool has a little shade under the shadows of the trees early in the morning and the shade of the pool bar is also welcoming in the morning, although shallow for swimming. ⁃ Watch out in the afternoon for the stinging insects (wasps maybe?) there were loads of them. ⁃ Its highly recommended to take your own insulated cups with lids to keep your drinks cool, but also the insects away from your drinks. ⁃ You might also be glad of some more covering clothes, despite the heat. We were very glad to have some long sleeve t-shirts sometimes. It’s one less thing to worry about when you’re out on an excursion and your backpack in rubbing your sun cream off. ⁃ The roads in and out of the resort and some excursions are VERY bumpy and windy. If you’re someone who gets travel sick, you may want to bear than in mind and perhaps make some accommodations. ⁃ I regret bringing a plastic water flask and not a metal one that would keep my water cold for longer. Thankfully, there are some ice machines in parts of the hotel and you can easily fill your bottle with ice before leaving for an excursion there or in a restaurant. ⁃ I also regret not bringing my camera, I decided to rely on my phone's camera as I assumed it would just be bulky and I wouldn’t use it, but actually the scenery and wildlife was so beautiful, it would have been worth it. Also, you can usually leave things on the bus during excursions. ⁃ The wi-fi was very good and worked in most of the hotels including the rooms which was great! ⁃ We were a group of 6 in 3 different rooms. One couple were pretty unlucky with their room, over the two weeks, their TV stopped working, the lock broke and needed changing and they had a leak in the ceiling and a lot of water came pouring through. Thankfully none of their things were underneath! It was a pain but maintenance were always nice and efficient. ⁃ Our daughters had some discomfort because a couple of entertainers were EXCESSIVELY flirty and inappropriate. They ended up finding them on social media, calling them their girlfriends, saying they wanted to kiss them during the evening entertainment and asking them constantly where they were and what they were doing. It felt a bit inappropriate, especially as one has a boyfriend but they were not deterred. ⁃ These experiences aside, the people are so friendly. The locals but also the guests. I had many conversations with people in the pool or the elevator. I’m from France, where we aren’t really known for our friendliness 🤣 so this was a nice change. Only one guy was an idiot and pushed the iguana into the pool and shouted abuse at anyone who called him out. Outside of the hotel, we also saw a guy trying to give beer to a monkey which is extremely dangerous. What a shame to go to Costa Rica and abuse the wildlife 😒 Everyone else was great and so respectful. ⁃ I’ve seen a bit of discussion here about the quality of the food…We personally enjoyed it very much. We found plenty to eat every day and was very happy with the quality. It was far superior to other resorts we’ve been to. ⁃ The whole hotel was spotless! Everywhere you looked something was being cleaned. The rooms, the restaurants, the lobby, public toilets, everything was extremely clean. ⁃ The entertainment staff, other than the couple mentioned were all very pro and friendly. I take my hat off to all the dances working in that extreme humidity and heat. One of the evening dance acts was better than the other, but perhaps they are less experienced. ⁃ The parties were amazing and far surpassed my expectations. Fabulous decorations and lots of in-party surprises. I wont give any spoilers but fair to say the best holiday parties I've been to. ⁃ Lots of holiday rep desks to book trips with if you've not done so already. All very friendly and helpful. But all the trips are very expensive. Both with the reps and locals. Be prepared to need a lot for spending money if you want to see the sites. ⁃ Regarding trips, haivng the Diamonte park next door was also an attraction for us, it was really nice to have something close to the hotel. Well worth a visit, but thats another review. ⁃ If you venture out even just to the beach, you will be asked if you want things, but a polite no thank you, sees to it and they dont tend to bother you any more. For a nice walk head down to the beach, go left to the monkey bar or go right to the end and round the block for a further walk. Monkeys can be seen at most times of the day and racoons are around the Ocotal restaurant in the evenings. ⁃ Overall, we're all very happy with the holiday. It was not without problems, but we brushed things off and had an amazing time. The rooms were perfect and had everything. The staff were nice, the food was great, the wildlife was beautiful. Truly as holiday to remember. ⁃ Would I go back? Because of the price No, but thats the only reason. We went knowing it was a once in a lifetime holiday for us, but thats the only reason. If money was no object or I was coming from a closer destination then I'd definitely go back.

    Very clean and great service.

A nice variety of restaurants, the staff was very helpful / accommodating and the whole resort was continuously kept very clean. We enjoyed the scuba diving and other tours. The food was mediocre for the most part but lots of variety.
