One of the best resort in Playa Del Carmen
My 6th time at Iberostar Grand Paraiso and still loving it. The liquor options have improved, the buffet has less options than in the past but doesn’t disappoint and the service staff are top notch. Vegan dishes are creative and tasty at every restaurant including the buffet. For my family, Elena Garcia shines, she goes out of her way to please! 👏

Not the hotel it used to be
Our 3rd time at this resort but sadly will be our last. The positives are that the hotel and rooms are still lovely. The negatives however outweigh the positives. Last time we came, there were more restaurants and great entertainment in the purpose built theatre. The theatre is now used for paid shows. The evening entertainment is now either outside or in the atrium. It is advertised as all inclusive but sadly is not anymore. From the moment we arrived there was a very pushy sales pitch to try and get you to sign up to the iberostar holiday scheme with promises of tickets to the show. When we explained that we were tired and just wanted to go to the room the push continued. We advised we would think about it. For the next fortnight we were bombarded daily. The room system must alert when you go in as after about 5 mins the phone went with yet more offers if we joined for a breakfast meeting. We politely declined explaining again it was supposed to be all inclusive and we weren't interested. This constant daily marketing spoilt the holiday. The other disappointing thing was the watersports are now operated by a company outside of iberostar and they were more focussed on getting all the paid motor sports out every day than the sports such as sailing that are part of the all inclusive. There was a different excuse every day. The main buffet restaurant was frequently closed and as the other restaurants you had to book we ended up having to dine at the nearby restaurant buffet where choices were limited and you were not able to have the higher quality wine despite wearing the appropriate wrist band. The wine in the room is not good and the soft drinks don't get replaced unless you ask. If you have drunk items from the mini bar it makes sense just to replenish them!. The pool drinks staff were amazing and didnt stop all day ,always with a smile. The maintenance of the hotel grounds needs to be more efficient though as the Jacuzzi was out of order throughout the stay as well as the swim up pool bar. The other staff to praise are the fabulous golf buggy drivers who ferry guests around 24 hours a day and nothing seems to be too much trouble. Such a shame that a once fabulous hotel has been spoilt by some strange management decisions and because of this we will not be returning there but will be going back to another chain where all inclusive means all inclusive and no pressure selling.

Overall, Okay.
This is a mixed review, if you see my profile you will see that I do my best to never give less than a four star review. I really do try to be positive and fair. First, the resort itself, the grounds, and the rooms are all luxurious and clean. We got a ground room floor and our balcony was almost literally on the beach, which was fantastic! We ordered room service the first afternoon as we were very hungry from traveling all day. It took over an hour to arrive, and was easily one of the worst meals I have had in my life, not just on the stay... in my actual life. We traveled as part of a work group, and heard that everyone else had the same experience with room service, so we didn't try again the rest of the trip. All the other restaurants can be described as mediocre. The Teppanyaki restaurant is far and away the best as far as serving size and taste. We also felt like the restaurants all closed too early. One of the nights we opted to attend the major show on site, and it was a good show. We would recommend attending if you are staying at the resort. The Grand Paraiso also offers free evening entertainment near the pool, each show was different, but all performers were talented. The staff was nice overall, but honestly, compared to other resorts the service left something to be desired. For example, I ordered a "virgin margarita", and the server just looked at me and said "so you just want a lemonade?" in a voice that was not overly kind or funny. This was a common theme throughout many of our interactions. The entire Riviera Maya/Cancun area is also plagued by Sargassum (seaweed). It piles up on the beach and stinks, and is generally unpleasant to walk on. It is honestly so bad that, as this was our second trip to the area, we are likely not to ever go back because for what you are paying for for beach time, it makes it close to not being worth it (which I find so sad for the area, because it really is so beautiful and has amazing things to see and do). In this case, the resort had it cleaned up the first day we arrived, and the beach was not cleaned again (based on what I saw) the rest of our stay (4 nights). By the last day we didn't even bother going to the beach at all. The beaches in this area are also typically pretty rocky, and this beach was no different. If you are someone who likes to play in waves with soft sand at your feet I would do as much research as you can on resorts and their beaches. We wore our dive shoes, and this definitely helps, but it was still ankle twisting. This brings us to the pool. Since we didn't bother much with the beach on the last day, we went to the pool. We spent a lot of the time trying to decide if the water was green/yellow from the water... or the tile. We eventually were pretty grossed out by it overall, and decided to be done with swimming. You can see in one of the pictures that I post, that it isn't quite the same shade of green/yellow all over. The resort offers fun pop-up guacamole making classes, shows, games, and activities all the time. The guac class was delicious. You don't actually get to make it yourself, it is more "lecture style", but you do get to taste, and it was quite good. There is a "mall" on site, you get there by taking hitching a ride on one of their golf cart taxi's. However, do your best to just bring everything you need. We picked up a few snacks and a bottle of sunscreen, and the sunscreen itself was over $30, not pesos. My husband also forgot his swim trunks; 1 pair of swim trunks was $80+, again... not pesos. We did have a great time on this trip. It is hard to be at a resort in Mexico and have a "bad" time... If we went back, I would try other resorts in the area before coming back to this one.

Why go anywhere else?
The minute you arrive at the lobby, you are greeted by Ricardo, "Welcome Home", and it all comes back. This is why you have chosen the Grand for your last 4 vacations. These are just some of the reasons it just keeps getting better. THE ROOM Shortly after arriving at the room, we are greeted by our butler, Guillermo, who points out all the workings of the safe, TV, A/C, coffee maker ad the Iberostar app. Throughout our stay he will find us everyday to see if we need anything. It is impossible not to notice the impeccable cleanliness and detailed appointments such as robe and slippers, mosquito spray and a large selection of coffee, tea and snacks. L'ATELIER FRENCH RESTAURANT The fine team of Yazmin, Emilio and Roberto ensure you will have a great meal from table selection to some off- menu suggestions. Book this restaurant quickly because it's reputation for excellence makes it very popular. MIRADOR LOBBY BAR While it is obvious that Daniel is in charge, his team of Dario, Armando and Johnathan all make great cocktails and provide excellent service. Try a pistachio martini or a new selection from the bar menu. POOLS There are 3 pools at the Grand. The largest salt-water pool where music and activities prevail, the quiet pool for those who just want to chill and the indoor spa pool-nice on a rainy day. Pool concierge Mirna will take care of your cabana-changing out your wet towels, drawing your curtains to keep out the sun and tidying up your place. She is absolutely delightful as are the servers who continually bring you drinks or snacks. If you choose to get your own drinks you can swim or walk up the the newly renovated swim up bar where Eli or Humberto will quench your thirst. It is impossible to write about every aspect of the Grand, but one thing is for sure. It is the employees--from executive and administrative to servers, housekeepers and bartenders that make this resort special. Why go anywhere else?
