    Relaxing Tropical setting

We arrived at the Iberostar Costa Dorada, Puerto Plata on Saturday May 18 to May 25, 2024. We flew with West Jet Airlines. Smooth flight. No complaints other than we had to pay for checked luggage $40 per person going and $33 US per person coming home. Made our really good deal we got to Dominican and extra added costs, not so good deal. Oh well, we arrived safe and home safe. The bus ride from airport to hotel was about 25 minutes. Perfect! Check-in was quick and efficient. We had room 7211, 3rd Floor. We have a view of the pool and ocean. We were the end-corner room. Drinking Water: This resort is eco-friendly. You have tall, glass water jugs in your room, on every floor there is filtered water stations and ice cubes. We drank it every day! Kudos for Iberostar getting rid of plastic bottles. Also, all your drinks are not in disposable, plastic cups - drinks are served in either glass or washable plastic. Very impressive. Room: It was very nice. Sure, outdated, but it well well-maintained. Cleaned every day by a very sweet lady. Shower worked perfectly. Good water pressure and always hot as you like it. Never once saw a bug. Never saw any mosquitos, and they always go for me. I think I got one bite all week. Breakfast: All I can say is awesome? Somany choices. Lots of fruits. We met a beautiful young woman named Isobel. She wears a tall chefs hat. If you needed anything she would get it done. Although we never needed anything. Lunch: To be honest we ate at the outdoor beach snack area. Omg, never been to an all-inclusive with so many lunch choices at an snack bar. Mostly I ate white rice, boneless chicken and nachos with cheese and guacamole. Delicious! I also had a hamburger twice with fries. Also, cold cuts, cheeses, olives etc. Lots of salad choices and always tons of fruit. There was more but that was my diet all week and I enjoyed every part of lunch. Dinner: We only ate at the Buffet first night, and two other nights (lots of choices and very good). We had the Japanese Teppanyaki Al la Carte twice. It was so much fun and delicious. We also had the Mexican one night. It was also fantastic. Best Margarita I’ve ever had was in the Mexican Restaurant. We did the Italian one night, but it wasn’t really to our liking. Having Italian in my household, we know Italian cooking, and that was not it. But we still enjoyed a nice dinner outside (it was held in the daytime snack bar area). Pool area: Luckily the week we were there, fortunately there was no “lounge lizards” getting up at 6 am to claim chairs. There was tons of loungers still at 9 am. We never sat at the pool, but we could have. We sat further past the pool area, where there is something like 4 rows of loungers, all with their own palapas, two loungers and a sling back chair. We had the same spot for 7 days and didn’t have to get up early to get it. It was perfect. Our room was a two minute walk away, the pool behind us along with the snack bar about a two minute walk and the beach in front of us, again a two minute walk. Best part the beach bar was about 100 feet next to us. Beach: We walked the beach every day. The first morning we walked to the right. Beware the market sellers will try to get you. We never went to the beach market. Did it years ago and they were so aggressive. We just avoided them or waved them off in a nice way, No Thank You! We did go a long way and a lovely couple took some amazing pictures of us. We found when we walked to the left, past the Be Live Marian Resort, it was beautiful. No one around. Walked out on the sand bars, got some amazing shots of the tides coming in and out. Beach: Okay, it isn’t white, powder sand, its light brown LOL but it was still gorgeous. Water was always many colours of blues and green. Never rough, we swan every day. No complaints. The last full day we were there the tide brought in tons of seaweed, but that was happening all over the Caribbean. It was the only day. The beach crew were trying to clean it up. Didn’t bother us, and it was last day. Service: Everywhere was fantastic. Maybe not being a full capacity week, helped, I don’t know, but we had great service everywhere. Shows: We don’t really partake in the shows at any resort. We did on the Michael Jackson night and it was nice to watch. Seen it many times, but always the one we can sit through. Bars: No problem getting drinks. Grounds: Beautiful, well manicured, very tropical. All lit up at night. Lots of outdoor seating at night outside of the theatre in a courtyard. Servers walk around getting your drinks. Overall we had a fantastic Week. Great weather (between 82F and 92F and sunny). It rained only two evenings, but it was around 4:30 pm and didn’t last long. Admirable Mentions: ISOBEL in the Main Buffet, lovely young woman, great service and will help you with anything in the Buffet. ALEXI at the Front Gate (Security). He was so helpful. We used google translate to communicate. He arranged a couple of things for us outside of the hotel in to Puerto Plata and gave us great directions to other places. My brother recommended us to go seek him out for any help we may need outside of the hotel. TONY, he works the Al la Cartes. He arranged for us to get in the Japanese twice and the Mexican. He was amazing. Very friendly and helpful. WILLIAM at the beach bar made the best drinks of the resort. Try the Summer Breeze, but only get William to make it. The MC was always giving us a cheerful hello before the show. If you have any questions, please ask me. I give honest reviews. We've been to this resort three times now. The last time was over 10 years ago and it was still just as nice if not more since then. If you are looking for a smaller hotel, great service, beautiful grounds and pool, great ocean swimming and also fantastic food - come here. No regrets. You can walk the whole resort without buggy rides. The beach you can walk a very long way to the right, and to the left is quiet and less walked, but we still swam near the Be Live Marian resort - and loved walking the sand bars to the left of hotel. Lots of sea glass if you love collecting. Have a great holiday wherever you choose.

    Dont go

This hotel is filled with the most racist rude staff I have ever encountered. Their food is terrible and undercooked. They should not be an all inclusive resort. They should just be a hotel. And the water at the beach is really dirty. I found rust in my Coke bottles, but they gave me in the room

    Nice but average

We had a good time with a large group of people, plenty of pool chairs and staff very friendly and accommodating. I was surprised at how run down things appear. With a facelift this would be a beautiful property. The beach access is great! The food is average but edible. No serious complaints other than not exactly what we expected from the photos.

    Keep looking

Pros: 1. Grounds are absolutely beautiful! 2. Had no trouble getting chairs at the pool and beach. The pool is huge, so it never felt overcrowded. 3. Staff was friendly- Medrano is the best! Cons: Rooms could use updating. Had to call maintenance a couple of times to fix the toilet. Shower had no door so floor would get very wet. Also, it was very dingy. Food- if I was rating just the food, I’d give it 1 star and if it wasn’t for the Japanese restaurant, I’d give 0 stars. The buffet had same options every day and many times food was cold. I’m used to all inclusives that seat guests even at the buffet, so you always arrive at a clean table with silverware and cotton/cloth napkins. It was hard finding a table and many times they were dirty, including the chairs, with one paper napkin per person if any at all. The plates in the buffet were often dirty.

Excellent hotel with fantastic staff throughout and a great atmosphere. Gardens and grounds have a luscious tropical feel. Large comfy beds in spacious rooms. Great variety of food. Bars well stocked with premium drinks. William at the beach bar and Mary in reception made our holiday and we will definitely be back.
