Caribbean restaurants
We celebrated our anniversary here for our last night at the resort. Miguel, our server, took the best care of us! Eddie, the chef, offered to cook a special menu just for us! The food was absolutely amazing. Perfect service all the way. 10/10!!

Would not recommend this hotel
*food is not good, no AC is ever running in restaurants which makes it smell inside and very uncomfortable to eat while sweating, service is extremely slow *lots of bugs, be ready if you have allergies *the AC in the room is controlled by the hotel, you will not be able to change the temperature

Disappointing - not 5 star
We booked this 2 week holiday with relatively short notice due to some family Illness. Given we were restricted with dates ( we needed one of the weeks to be in the UK half term) and that there were 14 of us, we knew we may have trouble getting our first choice. However, booking with TUI, a reputable company who advertised this resort as 5 star platinum, we thought we would be ok. As seasoned travellers who have travelled to genuine 5 star resorts, this most definitely was not one. We read loads of reviews and the bulk say excellent and so we thought anything negative was just people being fussy. Had it been advertised as a 3 or 4 star we wouldn’t have had the expectations we did. ROOM My husband and were in room 9114 which is a swim up room. It was large with a fab shower and spa bath. Room cleaned well, often later in the day, and stocked up with whatever we needed in the fridge. However other members of our party who were also in block 9, facing out to children’s pool, sometimes did not get cleaned or fresh towels unless a call was made to reception. We pre booked our room via the TUI guide and having read reviews chose pool facing rooms as we read those guests in rooms facing the mangroves were bitten a lot and we could see evidence of that round the pool with some people smothered in bites. We bought 4 x plug in insect repellents as well as a bug zapper for the room from Amazon. Thankfully we only got a couple of bites at the end of the holiday, but that was out and about when we forgot to use our Jungle spray. I would recommend taking some repellent and anti bite treatment in case. As Brits we missed tea. You could get some at breakfast but it was hit and miss. Only a coffee machine in room which heated water but took forever so take a travel kettle and your own teabags and you can then get fresh milk from the buffet to keep in fridge. There is an iron and hairdryer and umbrella in room but again not in all rooms so just ask. I’ve read reviews saying people can smell mould but not sure if this was the mangroves which gave off a pungent smell especially after any rain. RESTAURANTS The Zen restaurant has 2 parts. One with Teppanyaki and another part with more noodles and other meats etc. both were amazing. The steakhouse was also one of our favourites. Buffet food in evening was variable with some good nights and others less so. We had several children with us and wherever we went they were very accommodating and provided alternatives such as fries, nuggets, pizza etc. Two main gripes. Firstly there was no air con in any restaurant. The steakhouse especially was stifling. Also we witnessed tables left empty with queues outside, not sure if this was short staffed or a push for money. When we went to make a reservation each day for 14 people, which we understand is a stretch, we were told there was no availability. However, when my husband asked if we could buy any wine they were able to fit us in. Premium wine ended up costing us up to $150 extra each meal. We had no choice as we had youngsters that needed a reasonable mealtime but also we wanted to be together. The TUI party evening at Armadillos was great with amazing food and entertainment so please go if you get chance. ENTERTAINMENT Some good nights including fire show on the beach and some of the dances. Great vibe in the evening with a central place round the pool where everyone congregated with great music. Some days round pool were more quiet than others. Not a great deal for teenagers but splash pool entertained the little ones. TIPPING CULTURE This was on a whole other level. When you’re paying all inclusive you don’t expect to tip on this level. Tips should be to recognise good service not to actually just receive a service. We obliged as we witnessed some excellent service especially 2 of the pool bartenders who worked tirelessly all day to support our large party round the pool. Nothing was too much trouble and Jose and Noe were excellent. However, the tipping was endless so be prepared if you don’t want to wait a long time for service. ENVIRONMENT This hotel was very tired and rundown. The main lobby and spa were first class (recommend the couples massage) but the state of the pool near the kids pool was terrible. We saw at least 10 people slip and fall. The concrete is sloped and cracked and like ice when wet. We took to wetting towels and putting down by our beds in front of the pool to stop us slipping while getting in and out of pool. A matter of time before someone is seriously injured. Would not be allowed this in UK. ILLNESS By far our biggest issue. All but 1 of us got diarrhoea. This lasted several days and caused stomach cramps and passing basically what was like yellow water. We only had 4 nights where the whole party made it through dinner at night. There was some vomiting but mostly upset stomachs. We believe it wasn’t contagious as there were a good few days been members of our party getting it. Two of us are nurses and believe we’ve been exposed to contaminated food or water. It ruined our holiday. We’ve logged this with TUI Reps but they said no one else had complained when in fact we’ve seen reviews to say others had reported it. Rushing to the toilet several times a day and overnight left us exhausted. We were told to see a Dr which would have cost us $200 each so we just tried to treat ourselves which cost a fortune ( see below) SHOPS BE PREPARED !!! A packet of x 6 Loperamide (Imodium) cost $18!!! This with a packet of Ibuprofen, a packet of Skittle sweets and a large packet of Cheetos cost $55!! Please bring plenty of medication and any snacks as the cost of things here is extortionate!! GENERAL BE warned that on arrival they provide a wrist label which is essentially a small disk on string which is then tied roundyour wrist. It allows you to gain access to your room via swipe which is handy but we were told that if it was lost it would cost you $95 per day for each day left of your holiday so please keep an eye on kids wrist bands and that they stay secured. Also a tax for leaving the hotel as well as Mexico so it all adds up. We booked a Catamaran trip which we loved but on top of this cost you have to pay a maritime tax too! FINAL THOUGHTS Absolutely not 5 star and given the money we paid on top of hidden charges, tipping, cost of items in shops I would look to pay more money to stay somewhere better. We ideally wanted the Royalton Splash next door but there was no availability, and upon talking to others on day trips, they had a much better experience. We enjoyed the weather and quality time as a family but feel this resort was not accurately advertised to us and feel let down by TUI and we will be writing to them. Clearly others have had a different experience but I think we weren’t the only ones to feel let down.
