Great Hotel But Needs to Restore Pre-COVID Food & Services

First, The Good. I’ve had the pleasure of staying at this hotel at least 8 times since 2008. The first time for my honeymoon and most recently with my 4 year old son. It is an absolutely beautiful property with a great design and location on the sunny South Shore. Regardless of whether I was there for romance or family fun, it has always delivered in spades, and this trip was no exception. Indeed, on this latest visit, the service was truly excellent. All of the staff were amazing from the front desk, to the concierge, to the pool side waiters, the waiters at Tide Pools, and the housekeepers. Over the course of 8 days, no one ever missed a beat. While it might not be quite Four Seasons level service, it is extremely close and also not a Four Seasons level price… so the service was definitely first rate and above par for this price point. Now, The Not So Good. The food quality and options across the hotel were greatly deminished since my many pre-COVID visits. The main upscale restaurant on the property, Dordieno’s, which had been a romantic spot with great food and wine was closed and not replaced. Worse still, the food quality at the remaining options was noticeably worse than before and very sub-par. The room service menu was the same as the pool side menus, all of which were scaled back a lot since the pre-COVID days. This meant the same boring options whether eating in the room, at the restaurants, or at the pool… and the quality of the items was lower too. It seems like the hotel has gone to a central kitchen model, and frankly, it shows in a very bad way. Room service used to come from the hotel’s two quality restaurants and offered real variety and tasty food. Now, it’s like ordering from the pool side cafe in your room. The pool side offerings were also much more numerous, including a huge smoothie menu (with or without alcohol). Staying there 8 days it felt like we were stuck eating and ordering the same boring list of items everywhere we went… and it was very unsatisfying. This was a new development for this hotel and it needs to be fixed. To put in harshly, it felt like this hotel had moved from a Mandarin Oriental/Ritz/St. Regis/Waldorf food model to the Sheraton Resort/Disney Hotel food model of bad food sold at a high price. While I know everyone had to cut back during COVID… COVID is over, way over, and this does’t fly anymore at this price point. If this hotel is going for 3 star, Holiday Inn level food then this ok, otherwise, a change is needed. Similarly, the hotel got rid of its kids club and stopped renting small paddle canoes and SUP boards for its salt water pond. Hyatts used to have great kids clubs and since I was vacationing with my wife and young son on this trip, we had been hoping to have a nice dinner on property as a date night while our son played at the kids club, as well as a couples massage. No dice. Again, this was a COVID cutback and needs to be restored. A big resort like this with family friendly amenities needs a kids club. Having one would likely also increase spending by the adults on spa services and dining, since those are things one can best do when the little ones are otherwise occupied. Long story short, this is still a truly great hotel and I still highly recommend it. It is either the best on Kauai or tied with the One Hotel on the North Shore. And to be clear, we had a great time and will return again. The amazing service and staff made this visit a great one for us. But the obvious COVID related cuts to restaurant options, food quality, kids club, and equipment rentals need to be fixed. It’s not 2020 or 2021 anymore.

    Gorgeous Resort

My daughter and I stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort last week and loved it. Even though it rained every day (except for our last 2 days) we enjoyed the pool, restaurants and spa. We rented a cabana on the ocean, relaxed and enjoyed the view. The lazy river was relaxing and fun. I enjoyed the buffet breakfast very much. The Spa was great, best massage I ever had!! The grounds are absolutely beautiful!!! I highly recommend staying at the Grand Hyatt Kauai!

    This hotel is wonderful!

There is absolutely nothing bad to say about this hotel. The room was spacious and clean. The grounds are beautiful. The pools are well maintained and gorgeous (and you can choose to use the adults only pool as well). The staff is helpful and kind.

    3 Star Hotel at best

Not many luxurious choices on Kauai other than One Hotel Hanalei and Timbers. We wanted to stay a few nights on the south side before we moved to One Hotel and decided to try the Hyatt based on the overinflated points of view on TripAdvisor. Room is dated and dingy, long long walks to some of the rooms. One and done.

    40 on a scale of 10.

Landscape crew good to talk too. Pool water is too cold. Want to return. Flew first class. Want to learn golf and play Poipu Bay. Shopkeepers great with good stuff. Including table vendor. I tell everybody buffet is step above the completion.
