Our experience
We found this resort to be of a very good standard. Our room which was in a privileged block was spacious, clean and contained all the advertised extras, ie towels, slippers, robes etc. No complaints there save for it being a twin room. We were offered a room change but decided against the hassle of changing and squeezed into a double bed, so no issue. The food was good enough...plenty of variety in the buffet - omelette lady deserves a mention for her happy service. Restaurants were good although we found the Japanese one confusing and gave up waiting to get seated and went to buffet instead. We saw another couple there who likewise had given up on that seating and went to buffet so maybe it was that particular evening. The beach is lovely and we spent most days there. We didn't get hassled by locals selling goods, they offered and if we weren't interested they didn't exert pressure. The pool looked very nice but the collected scum at the side put us off going in. A good clean is needed. We had a few issues on arriving with the hotel being overbooked. A manager Kelly "managed" these in a pleasant courteous way leaving us feeling very positive. My advice to people who may experience problems is to raise them via email while on site and hopefully you will have them dealt with as swiftly as us. I would highly recommend this resort.

Poor service and less than adequate food and drinks
I would not recommend this resort to anyone who expects 4 star service and quality food. We recently stayed for a week in a junior suite room. The resort and pool area were nice, rooms were fairly clean, and bed was comfortable but no hot water in our room for showers and our towels and water bottles were not replaced. Although some of the staff were happy and friendly, most were not and did not seem happy. Many did not understand basic English. Food in buffet was not good, often cold and not replaced. Recommend eating in the restaurants as much as possible.

Dissapointed
Many issues with Air Conditioning, Fridge, TV. Waited for many hours for service techs that most often wouldn't show up and I'd have to call the front desk ... again and again. I tallied that I lost a whole day of vacation just waiting for service calls to get resolved. And in the end, the AC never got working well. Also, watch out for the 'Loyalty Program' salesmen. Ours called us a 7:45am to let us know that he had a beach bag for us and to meet him at 8:30am to get it. Although I was annoyed by the early call, I agreed and met him. He then proceeded to tell me that I don't get this bag unless I go to the seminar (see: timeshare shpeel). I told him that I wasn't interested in any loyalty program so he promised that if I go, he'll give me 2 beach bags and 3 free massage coupons. With this, I agreed so that I could get them for my family. He said he'd pick me up at 10am and take me there. He was 25 minutes late and when he arrived he asked where my family was. I told him they weren't coming and that I had agreed to go alone with him. Then he backpeddles about the beachbags and massage coupons.... we went back and forth but nothing positive transpired. No beach bags, no massage coupons, ... nothing but bait and switch. We have stayed at other resorts in DR and were much happier there. We will not be returning to the Catalonia. On a positive note though, the wait, bar staff and the food were all great. Kudos to the wait and bar staff!

Great fun on the beach
We had a great stay. I wanted to give a shout out to the beach bar staff that kept us happy all day. The specialty restaurants were good and we thought the buffet had a good variety even though we didn't understand tuna pizza and omelets. Definitely would revisit.

There is a lot of room for improvement. Giving them a 6 out of 10 rating is being generous.
The room cleaning service was a joke. Couldn't get fresh towels for showering even when we asked for clean ones. Had to go get our own water for drinking and coffee on day 2. (You can not drink ANY of their faucet water, it has to be bottled.) Room service would take our empty water bottles and rarely replaced them with full bottles. There was little millipede-like worms crawling everywhere, including in our room, shower, and bathroom. Room service rarely vacuumed. The Buffet: The food was luke warm at best and often cold. Only one salad dressing was available. Almost all of the beef was extremely low quality due to bone chunks, fat, and grizzle all being mixed in it. The overall quality of meats was sub-par. The omelets and deserts were great. The beach towel exchange program is a joke. They rarely had beach towels available. The service at the bars was great. The bartenders were very quick, polite, and hard working. Kudos to them. The overall cleanliness of the resort was very good, but our room service was bad. The landscaping was excellent and a bunch of that crew was very friendly. We planned to rent golf clubs and play a round of golf, until we found out that we had to buy their new golf balls at $8.00 per ball. The balls and tees should be included in the rented bags, or at the very least, only charge $1.00 per ball or something reasonable. So we didn't play. That's a rip-off. Overall, I'd give this resort a 6 out of 10 rating. We've stayed at way better places. We'll never stay there again. There are too many better options.
