    4 night stay in a 1 bedroom Banyan View Suite

    Stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian for 4 nights before finishing our vacation on the Kona side. We were in room 743 on the 7th floor - a 1 Bedroom Banyan View suite. The website indicated this room type slept 5. The bedroom had 2 queen beds and there was a sofa and upholstered chair and footrest in the living room as well as a dining table with 4 chairs. The sofa was not a sofa sleeper and there were no additional linens or pillows for the sofa. I went to the front desk to inquire about a 5th towel set and sheets and a blanket for my son. I was able to get the towels from the front desk and someone brought a blanket to our room. Later on, we saw a rollaway in a hallway. We were not offered a rollaway and I did not ask about one. We were here for 4 nights so I felt bad about having my son sleep on the sofa. He is around 64 inches tall and he was not able to fully stretch out on the sofa and had to sleep at an angle or curled up. This room type has a small fridge that froze some of our items so we had to keep adjusting the temperature dial. In the bedroom, the a/c fan was strong and the room got cold while sleeping. Our room also had a microwave and a cooktop. Reusable dishes were provided as well as dishwashing soap but no sponge. Paper towels would have been useful to have. When I booked the room, no breakfast was mentioned in the rate description but at check in, a Continental breakfast that we thought he said was complimentary was mentioned. We got confused because a sign in the room said the Continental breakfast was $10. We later found out that the first takeout box is free but if you want another box, there is $10 charge. The breakfast starts at 6:30a and due to the time change, we woke up early and were there when the doors opened. The breakfast is held in the casual grill restaurant that faces the water. Upon entering, you check in at the podium by giving your room number and name and you are handed a clear square portioned take out container and packaged sets of eating utensils. There are a few tables to dine in and it is easy for you to take out your food and drink. Coffee, tea bags and two types of juice and I think milk in glass pitchers were available to drink. There was a pot of oatmeal with brown sugar and raisins. Small round containers with lids allowed you to take out the oatmeal. The available fruit changed each day. The first day they had orange slices and whole apples. I recall cut pineapple and some other type of fruit sliced on the rind another day. Another table had 3 different types of pastries. Each of the four days we were there had plain croissants and filled pastries (guava?). The 3rd type of pastry rotated between small rectangular slices (banana bread?) and what looked like large sugar coated donut holes. Two of us were able to.eat in the restaurant and we refilled the container with pastries to take back to our kids who were still sleeping back in the room. The location of the hotel was great! Enjoyed the short walks to Coconut Island and the Liliʻuokalani Gardens. We walked to get Poke Bowls to go from the Suisan Fish Market. We also ate at at the Wailoa Grill on the side of the Fish Market building. Walked several times to the Ice House for ice cream and popsicles. The Ice House retail shop is in the same building as Hawaii Island Ice Distributors dba Alii Ice. The suite had a balcony connected to the living room and another balcony connected to the bedroom. The bedroom windows directly faced the water and the water could be viewed from the side view of the balconies. The hotel has a nice outdoor lobby area. There is a refillable water bottle station outside the lobby entrance. We always parked in the underground parking area which was nice when it was raining. Access to the elevator to go up to our room was quick and easy. Some areas of the hotel were tired and worn. Some reviewers mentioned rooms with bugs and odors but we experienced neither. The drive to Volcano National Park was about 40 minutes and driving downtown where the Farmers Market is took about 10 minutes. We noticed some floors of the hotel like floor 3 appeared to be undergoing refurbishment like repainting. The room size was spacious and gave us room for our family to spread out. The bathroom was split so the sink was outside and the shower and toilet were behind the door. Hawaiian Tropic shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion was provided. I would consider returning to the Hilo Hawaiian if we visit Hilo again but the 1 bedroom suite may not be the best set up for my family of 5.

    Good location, terrible staff experience, don’t stay here if you want a nice vacation

    I was actually planning to write a positive review when we had the worst experience in all of our 3 weeks vacation in Hawai (and this was the last of nine different places we stayed). We reserved 3 nights with booking.com and on the second day were told by the front desk (Mary) that booking.com had cancelled one night and we needed to reserve another night on our credit card (reservation until the issue is solved) in order to stay. Mary was unable to show us this “cancellation” and referred to people not available in the afternoon. It could have well be a scam by the hotel, fortunately we contacted booking.com and they called the hotel, telling them there was no cancellation. We lost 2.5 hours of our last day and were treated badly. Mary from the front desk (unfriendly and incompetent) even blocked the access card for my wife, blaming it on the system later. This is an entirely unacceptable behavior, management is responsible for hiring such staff and they should be held responsible as well. The rooms are OK though would welcome a refresh but the location is very nice. But with such staff, the whole stay became a bad memory. We wrote an email to the front desk manager Milton Valmoja who was not available at the time of the incident. Hopefully things will improve. Stay away from this place if you want to have a good vacation. At least as long as someone reports an improvement.

    Disappointed

    My family & I stayed for 1 night (we were having our home fumigated). I only packed 1 carry on size bag with 1 set of clothing for myself and husband to change when we checked out the following morning at 12 noon. Approximately 2 hours later (we were still in the car driving around because we could not enter our home until 5pm) I realized I left my shorts & blouse on the chair and my Apple Watch on the dresser, I called the hotel and was switched over to housekeeping. I told the employee I left the above mentioned items in the room, I was put on hold then the employee came back on the phone and told me no items were reported found in my room. Keep in mind that I double checked my carry on bag and it only contained my husbands clothes, I understand that it was my responsibility to care for my items, but when you go from the room to checkout counter to car and I know exactly where I left the items, it should have still been in the room. Disappointed.

    Disappointing

    Been here many times, can see it slipping. Attention to details, cleanliness, fit and finish is down. Property next door in renovation construction and very noisy, especially by the pool - too noisy to tolerate. Won’t be coming back here. Too bad.

    Happy with the room and location, not satisfy with the continental breakfast

    Great location. Friendly front desk staff. Our continental breakfast was not worth the price. Stayed 3 nights and the same breakfast each morning, banana bread, pastry with little fruit filling, round fried donut covered in sugar, oatmeal and fruit(different fruit each day). There was never enough and they did bring out other trays but it took about 20 minutes each day.
