Worst resort with 2.5* AT BEST!!

My wife & I stayed at the Bluebay Villas Doradas in Puerto Plata from November 7th to 18th. This is our experience. The good:  STAFF > the front reception, the restaurants, the bartenders, room attendants, and entertainment were all good and work very hard to keep the guests happy. Special mention to Anyelina and Antonio in the buffet restaurant for always greeting you with a smile, also the ladies at the omelette station (didn’t get their names but were always pleasant and smiling). Also Junior Mejia, Samantha and Liliana at the front desk who were all very pleasant and helpful  BEACH > even though the water was “murky”, the beach was spotlessly cleaned regularly, there was no sargassum, and you can safely walk for miles. There were local solicitors selling their products and services but would leave you alone if you politely say “no, gracias”  ROOM > our 2nd room (8122 on the 2nd floor) had good water pressure, hot water, air conditioning, a working fridge with daily replenishment of bottled water  A LA CARTE > the food and service at the seafood and Asian restaurants were good, but no shrimp included unless you pay for it!  There was plentiful papaya which we loved  ENTERTAINMENT > The nightly entertainment (the magic show and 80’s & 90’s shows were our favourites)  POOLS > There are 3 pools  We were not charged for the WIFI, unlike other guests’ reviews that I read, but it was unstable and lost connection frequently The bad:  this resort is very old, dated, desperately in need of a complete renovation or demolition  this is a 2.5* rating resort at best; definitely NOT a 4* and should not be rated as such  the “superior” room we had (room 8122) was VERY SMALL, with no furniture, except for the beds; there was ONE small 3 drawer cabinet; we hung whatever clothes we could hang, then left the rest in the suitcase  the first room (4180 on the ground floor) we were assigned had low water pressure, no hot water, fridge did not work, the water in the toilet bowl would not go down after flushing, and water seeped in under the front door into the room when it rained; many guests we met at the resort had issues with their rooms as well and had to change rooms  there was smoking EVERYWHERE in this resort; you needed to walk through the cloud of electronic and tobacco cigarettes smoke, and cigar smoke at the bar in the lobby to get a drink  about 30 guests (that we know of!!) had diarrhea and vomiting (including ourselves) between November 10 and 13; we only found this out while speaking with other guests; many guests reported this to Ramon Mercado, one of the managers, who never took anyone’s names, and told guests not to discuss with other guests and they were “handling the situation”; some guests were threatened with eviction from the resort if they were found discussing this matter with other guests  FOOD >>> the food in the buffet was between awful and mediocre, and ALWAYS COLD! (except for the pasta station); there was never any bacon or shrimp EVER; there was a choice of ONE TYPE OF FISH every lunch/dinner which tasted awful; my wife is vegetarian and they would have one pair of tongs for serving the ham and cheese; this was later rectified after bringing this to the attention of the Ramon Mercado; even though they change the dinner “theme” every night, it was still repetitive with a very small selection of dishes, with little options, and low grade food; the food is either not replenished or not replenished quickly enough  the resort is very understaffed, one person bringing your coffee/drinks, another person clearing and setting up the tables; when you needed a refill, sometimes you had to go to the bar yourself or help yourself (not a fault of the staff, just understaffed)  the alcohol tasted like cough medicine, it didn’t matter what type of alcohol (gin, vodka, rum, etc) and was very low grade  the tiles around the pool are VERY SLIPPERY when wet and raining; also some of the tiles are cracked and missing (again, dire need of renovation)  it became a regular habit that every time we passed the front desk we would have our room keys re-programmed because they were constantly not working We went with low expectations when booking this resort after reading many of the reviews, but it did not even meet our low expectations. It was worse than we were prepared for. There were many locals staying at the resort on weekends that were mostly quite pleasant and enjoyable to watch dancing meringue 😊 The entertainment staff try really hard to keep the guests engaged in fun activities. We will not recommend or ever go back to this resort again. Some of the guests that we met that have been to this resort in the past have said it has greatly gone downhill and they, too, will not return. We could not wait to return home. We paid way too much money for what we got. If it weren’t for the other nice guests that we met during our stay, we would have had an awful time. Not sure we will return to the DR in the near future. We have always loved and had great vacations in Jamaica. Yea, mon!

    Disappointed in this place

This place needs updating. Drinks were really bad pop was always flat. Coffee machines were always broke. Rooms leaked when it rained. Won’t be back. Beach was nice if your a younger couple I’d suggest a different place. Majority of the people here are seniors

First time down south was amazing!

My husband and our two best friends were here for the last week of October! It was our first time down south, and we weren't disappointed with BlueBay!! Alfredo, George, Lis and the rest of the purple shorts crew were the best hype up team! They made joining in on activities fun, and were so kind and welcoming. Their energy was unmatched. Silvestre in the buffet was warm and inviting for his dinner services, and the food was delicious! I loved the different varieties offered for each meal time, and shout out to Roy and Candela on the omelette station! At the bars, the drinks were tasty and well made. If you're going to the pool bar and Franklin is there, you're in for an amazing time and quality service. We saw him almost every day and he always made sure we were well taken care of with a sweet smile on his face. The property itself was well maintained and clean, thanks goes to Carlos who was always around doing the most to keep the grounds up kept. Our room was comfortable, and the AC units work almost too well which isn't a bad thing if you're going in the hot months. The front desk and maintenance were quick to help if something happened in the room, and we felt so safe the whole trip. My one complaint for the whole trip is that we felt the pools closed too early, with shut down time being 7pm. Other then that, we loved our experience at this resort and we hope to go back in the future!

Hard working staff doing what they can with an old facility and working for a liar@

Arriving at this "worn" resort, we were greeted by a very helpful front desk staff who provided all the info we needed for our stay. Upon arrival to the room, the shower head was noted to be at waist height, and the king size bed we requested was actually two doubles pushed together. After checking with the front desk, we were advised that there were no vacant rooms with a king bed and I was told to come back in the morning and check to see if there was a room that we requested available one. The hotel did not appear to be anywhere near capacity. The next morning, we lucked out, and we were able to change rooms. However, this room had a leaky central air outlet that had water dripping to the floor. Housekeeping fixed this problem by putting a towel under the drip. Before I go further, I was greatly surprised that the staff; from front counter to servers, entertainment, cleaners and gardeners etc. , work with what they have to work with to get the job done. Last year, we were here at the same time and noted that the facility has gone on a slide. The resort itself is getting tired looking. Minimal maintenance and repairs are being done. Upon arrival, you are greeted by a Bluebay sign above the front desk indicating it is a 4-Star. Chandler's in the lobby have not been cleaned in years as there is a build-up of dead bugs within. Rooms are found in multiple buildings, all of which are mentioned on the hotels website. The rooms vary in quality, not dependent upon the category of the room. For example, in the shower, you will either be standing on ceramic tiles or a worn plastic basin. Overpainting is plentiful! The walkways are the same as last year: worn, blisterd and with black wheel marks in the same place as last year! The bridge from the resort to the beach was being replaced while we were there. A plywood bridge nearby had been built and used. The main pool has four metal railings to enter/exit the pool. Be careful. Some are loose. The pool itself is missing tiles within the pool, as well as on the swim up stools. Black "stuff" on a couple was seen. What's even more of a concern, one of the underwater lights, near the swim up bar, is completely out of its housing, exposing the electrical wire. The shingles on the roof of the swim up are well past their best before date. Many of the deck tiles are loose and missing grout. There is one place on the deck, a potted plant is partially covering a spot where tiles shoyld be on the deck. The gutters around the pool bar building are dented and old. Yellow caution paint is painted on the corners of them as they are approximately five feet from the ground. A guest struck her head while we were there and had to be seen by the resort doctor. The pool is directly accross from the buffet. The white pillars that support canvas like material that are sun/rain stained are dated and require replacing or cleaning. The pillars have blisters of paint showing. The buffet needs obvious repairs and replacements done. The freezer which holds ice cream is missing a handle, so when the top is slid to open the freezer, it is almost impossible to close because the two pieces if the top stick together as a result of condensation. The kids to the crock are both broken off and I have seen them being knocked to the floor. Ground drains appear to be blocked, which causes the walkways to become full of rain water. In some building hallways, electrical panel covers are partially being held closed with a metal screw, screwed into the face of the panel where the plastic pull handle should be. Stair anti slip strips are peeling from the stairs to the upper floor rooms. On our previous trip to this resort, water, pop, and two small cans of beer were placed in the mini fridge each morning. Our fridge did get water, pip and beer for the first three days of our stay and the rest only two bottles of water. On the same topic of alcohol, the resort no longer has Barcello and Brugal rum choices or for that matter any named brand spirits, unless you want to pay a premium. Liquor within the resort, regardless of type, comes in the glass bottle, with the only difference being the label! Now for the "hard to believe this could be true" portion of the review. I and three other people traveled to this resort and all of usgot extremely I'll with a gastric intestine bug at roughly the same time. All of us spoke to other guests after our illness and found approximately 30 had the same symptoms as us. A couple of us approached the operational manager, a man who goes by two names, one of which is Rhaoul. When told by us, that we were all sick during the week, he replied that he only knew of one. A blatant lie. He then continued saying that water filters were in the sinks near the cooking stations in the buffet area and made the water potable. One of us later confirmed that there was no filter of any type at or under these sinks. We then contacted the Westjet local Dominican rep and explained what the problem was (all of us getting sick). And that we wanted to change hotels. She advised she would look into the problem and get back to us. The rep called us back on the same day and had obviously spoken to Rhaoul and taken his side as to what happened. The Westjet rep went so far as to say we could be moved to another resort for their one week fee (which was roughly the same as the cost of a weeks vacation including airfare!) and that we were not to speak to other guests about this, risking to be escorted off the Bluebay property by hotel security. We decided to remain at Bluebay for the remainder of our stay. During this time, we ate most of our meals off of the resort. I have to close by saying the food at the resort may have or may not have caused our illness. Our main concern is that one of the Hotels managers lied to us, which had me look at the resort as a value for the money I was spending. The resort is run down and requires a major renovation.
