    quick getaway

I stayed here with my partner for 4 days in the middle of the week-we were visiting family in Santiago and wanted a quick getaway. The reception area is beautiful, we felt welcomed and were allowed to check in early by paying a fee. We left our bags at reception, but were a little off put that they were not secured in any way. They were left sitting on the side of the reception desk until we were able to get to our room and then waited a while for them to be brought up. Our experience was average, the food left much to be desired. It was pretty hit or miss at the buffet and the a la carte restaurant. I understand that providing meals at such a large quantity has its challenges but the Dominican dishes they attempted to serve were a poor representation of our food. The drinks were decent, but nothing incredible. Our room was basic, reasonably clean but outdated. The beach was beautiful, pools appeared well maintained. This is not a luxury resort by any means but it was nice for what we were looking for. After being practically harassed multiple times per day to attend one of the membership presentations and being promised a "gift", we agreed. We decided quickly that we were not interested but had to let the staff member know multiple times before he stopped trying to convince us and we were not offered the gift as promised. Afterwards it was obvious that our comments about the food were shared because we were asked many times at dinner that night how the food was and if we were happy. Again, it was an okay experience for what we needed but we would never return.

Never returning - put my safety at risk

I had a terrible experience at this resort. I was a young woman travelling alone, which the workers knew because when I came to reception they said “you’re the one travelling alone”. Firstly, the reception/guest services member gave my room number to a man that came to ask them for it so he could return my towel that I left at the pool. They willingly, gave my room number, to another male who was travelling alone. Did not call me to ask, did not reject his request, just simply gave it to him. He promptly came to my room and proceeded to assault me. Secondly, at 2am, I was awoken to a man outside my door (a different man from the first point) in our villa screaming and pleading for help and for someone to call the police. He was banging on doors and yelling. It took hotel workers 20 minutes to arrive and see what was going on. Mind you, there was security on the property, reception was a 2 minute walk away, and the 24 hour doctor was just downstairs (and the walls are very thin). I don’t know how nobody came for 20 full minutes. It was a terrifying experience. I did not sleep the rest of the night. In the morning, I went to guest services and asked to check out immediately and changed my flight home. Guest services proceeded to call my room later and ask why I was leaving. I told her that someone from the hotel gave my room number out to a man and he came and assaulted me. She said that she was the one who gave my room number out and that he promised he wouldn’t do anything. She asked me to come talk to the manager, and he suggested I switch villas (assuming that the second incident was the only one that happened). I refused and said I wanted to leave. I did not feel safe anything, not only with the second incident, but that the hotel is willing to give your room number out to anyone with no questions asked. Everyone seemed to skim over the fact that they gave my room number out and I was assaulted, and only was concerned with the second incident. I didn’t want to repeat the first incident in front of all the guests wanting to enjoy their vacation. I had to talk to 5 different people just to check out early because they all asked me why and said I could just switch villas. That was not the problem - the problem was I did not feel safe there anymore and I was not going to stay any longer. When I got home, I made a complaint through the travel company about what happened and the hotel refused that they had any knowledge of what happened, said that details about my stay were private information, and they they had no record of any complaints and that I left over a “family emergency”. Funny that they have no record of it, because why would you willingly admit you gave out the room number of a solo female and she got assaulted. And funny that after the fact it was “private information” but while I was there my room number was just given out when someone asked. Overall, if you want to feel safe at a resort, this is not the one. And if you are a solo women traveller, I really don’t recommend this resort. Or even a group of women. Just overall very unsafe and absurd behaviour from this resort.

    Quiet, small and PERFECT!

We came to BlueBay Villas Doradas in Puerto Plata because it's an adult-only resort. This was our first time visiting and will definitely NOT be our last. It's approximately a 25-minute ride from the Puerto Plata International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional Gregorio Luperón) and you'll be the first stop for drop-offs! The staff are exceptional!! They are polite and hard workers. Although we cannot mention them all, we wanted to point out a few: from the buffet: Elvin is a natural at socialization, very welcoming, and has great energy, Elizabeth (the server that wears glasses) always has a smile on her face and you never have to ask her to fill your coffee cup or water glass, Jose (the big busboy guy) is very polite and really works hard cleaning up the plates from peoples tables and always has a smile on his face. The kitchen staff and chefs do an absolutely fantastic job preparing our meals. If you are vegan or vegetarian, you will not be disappointed because there is so much variety you won't be able to put it all on one plate! The buffet food is absolutely delicious! We were so amazed at the many flavors in so many dishes, bravo! One word of advice, you must wear a shirt for dinner; tank tops are not permitted. You are able to wear tank tops for breakfast and lunch. We did not dine in any of the a la carte restaurants only because we enjoy the buffet. We loved the fact that they have self-serve, cold water and juice dispensers and coffee machine at the quiet pool bar. The beach bar has self serve automatic coffee machine and water dispenser; the juice is behind the bar and you must ask staff who are often busy. We recommend the juice be self-serve at the beach bar as well. This was great to have a coffee on the beach, first thing in the morning as we watched the sunrise. The Bluebay grounds and beach and absolutely beautiful and clean, the groundskeepers need to be commended on their exceptional work. We suggest a shower at the beach area; there is a foot washing station available. The beach area is great and does not have any rocky or weedy areas in the water. There are no offshore snorkeling areas but there are excursions for that. The Guest Service Manager, Yuliana Ventura, was an absolute pleasure to deal with. She answered all our online inquiries and was very accommodating; we wanted to ensure we would get a quiet area because we are not party people and understand some guests are. The staff at the reception were always friendly and if there was an issue (our air conditioning wasn't working properly) they got on it immediately. Your room attendants are very efficient, polite and did a great job cleaning our room. We had the Superior Room, number 8112, although the room itself was very large, the bathroom was very small and poorly laid out; it could barely accommodate 2 people and the bathroom door couldn't fully open as it would hit the shower. It took a long time for hot water to come through; almost 5 minutes of constant running. There was considerable black mold in the silicon caulking around the shower glass. There was very little counter space and poor lighting over the bathroom mirror which made shaving challenging. Our room itself had a lot of wasted space and we would recommend hooks to hang towels and clothing. Perhaps a desk with additional area for useable space. Our room could have more functioning outlets, including USB outlets, for devices as well. Realizing this resort is older, although fairly well maintained, it could use updating in some areas but everything was functional. This resort is mainly for couples with an average age of 50ish. If you're looking for a quiet place to decompress this is it! The resort is not big, made up of villas, and only a short walk to wherever you want to go. The pools, similar to the grounds, are clean and well-maintained. The beach was our favorite! Thankfully they had plenty of palapas on the beach as staying in the sun's heat all day would be too much; we recommend some sort of an ashtray be mounted on the palapa's poles for the smokers on the beach who currently discard their cigarettes into the sand. There is daily beach maintenance to remove washed-up seaweed and pick up garbage from inconsiderate tourists; perhaps more garbage cans can be placed on the beach and painted differently (other than white) in order that they stand out so that tourists will use them. There are several licensed beach vendors who wear numbered shirts (in case you have to identify them for a complaint), that walk around you throughout the day selling various items such as sunglass, shirts, towels, sandals, etc., and services such as massages, manicure/pedicure, and hair braiding. The sand is more of a brown color, not white, and as such conducts a lot of heat. You will need beach sandals to walk on the sand close to noon, otherwise, you will scorch your feet; yes it's that hot! The Spa is worth a visit. My wife has some back issues and wanted a massage to help her. The Spa is very clean, the staff are very professional and the atmosphere is very relaxing. We often get therapeutic massages at home and can tell you that the staff knew how to give a massage. The prices are in USD, however, you can also pay in CAD, and you get an official receipt that you can use to claim on your benefits if this is an option for you. The staff were always hosting events on and off the beach such as aqua fitness, volleyball, stretching, entertainment in the evenings, dancing, etc., and were respectful if you didn't want to participate. We didn't participate in any of the excursions. Depending on what type of room you paid for, there may be an additional fee for the room safe and although wifi is free it's only free for one device. I recommend because this is an all-inclusive resort for couples (normally) that room safes (which is not a luxury but a necessity) be included in the price you paid and wifi be for all devices we come with (we have two phones and a tablet for business - and yes the wifi signal is excellent even on the beach). Alfredo Mogollón Ocampo, the Director General, does a great job managing this resort. We look forward to our second visit, which we already booked, in the fall of 2023 this time for 2 weeks!

Quiet, small, and all needed within steps.

It was quiet, with decent food. Breakfast was our favorite meal. Drinks were ok depending on the server. Beach was clean and the ocean super calm. My girlfriend had her birthday while at the hotel. I was able to arrange a romantic dinner by the beach with a server to ourself. Truly amazing. She was so happy.
