5 stars for a memorable stay despite renovations going on at the buffet
We were very excited to finally leave for Akumal as we had booked this vacations over 7 months ago . First the restaurants, which always play a pivotal role in our vacations and are a place were we always enjoy to speak spanish with the staff, learn new words and get to know the area in a different way. We knew the buffet was closed for renovations and that we had to go to the Coba Premier instead, it's a short 3 min. walk from the Akumal lobby. It happened to be one of the best surprises of the week. The food was excellent, there were 2 sections, one inside with a/c and the other outside. Service was A-1 all the time. Charcuterie, breads, cheeses were very good, as well as pastries and deserts. There was always a great selection of entrees with lots of variety, seafood/fish, meat, vegetables, vegetarian choices, some sushi etc... We were always greeted and served with a smile, nice words and questions about our day's experiences. Manuel was the best ! The rest of the team was great as well, Herminio, Aleksander, Maria and apologies to the others that served us as I didn't get all your names. We went there at least once a day, during the week, either for breakfast or lunch. The (almost) 24hr snack Acuario was also a great option, with the excellent service of Randi (closed only between 6 and 10PM). For diners, in order of preference, we went to Le Gourmet, The Mashua (Top service by Camaliel), The Gran Tortuga (Excellent service by Luis and his team), The Portofino, Frutas del Mar and Mediterraneo. Gabriella, our room attendant was always on top of her game. The minibar was topped up daily. The rooms were nice, with a beautiful ocean view (villa 48). However, an interior remodel would be great, a full renovation is not needed at the time, but the decor and furniture are a bit oldish. Overall the resort is very very well maintained and cleaned daily. Gardeners and maintenance do a great job. Everything works fine everywhere, common washrooms are super clean etc... Marble floors are always clean and shiny. The pools are magnificent and the beach is also very nice (4 stars) and while we were there, we saw lots of fish and very litlle algae (5 stars). However, we think that closing the beach at 5 and the pools at 7 is a bit early. 6 PM for the beach and 8 for the pools would be nice. There are lots of beach chairs everywhere, although the resort wasn't full. There are many bars, open most of the time and service is usually very good. Shows and entertainment are good, Abba, 80's and recent movies are shown in the theater (daily ?), silent disco is a winner. The shuttle service between the 4 lobbies is good, but it can be long sometimes, specially around meal times. Drivers are very nice. We mostly walked and stayed between the Akumal and the Coba. Finally, do tip all these guys and ladies that work hard to make you enjoy your vacation, it will be even better and a few bucks here and there won't make a huge difference in your budget. We have been to many resorts and really loved this one. For us, the Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal is a real 5 stars !
Good, better for families
Unfortunately can’t upload videos I enjoy the food. Mostly ranges from decent to great. The buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner are good. We ate at the Mexican themed restaurant, and it was good, and so was the other “Le Gourmet” sit down restaurant we tried. Try booking a la carte dinners as soon as you arrive as reservations fill up quickly Service staff are top class. Very helpful, friendly and supportive. We tip well but I don’t think it makes a difference, they were terrific all week. Rooms are standard and clean Body lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash is the best quality I’ve personally experienced Shower pressure and temperature were great Flight journey was seamless Transfer is about 2 hours from airport as we dropped off people at other resorts first. It was quicker on the way back because we didn’t stop routinely to drop off passengers at other resorts. There’s a representative waiting near the exit of the airport. Stay away from car rental representatives. We were supposed to be in Coba but got a free upgrade, shout-out to Jesus (not our Lord and Saviour but the resort manager Jesús) Got complimentary lemonade when we checked in (they offered champagne but I don’t drink) Nightly entertainment (circus, musicals etc.) are pretty decent There’s a marketplace/bazaar to do some shopping at. Decent prices Shuttles to the other nearby resorts come frequently. You could walk for 5-15 minutes if you choose to. Snack bar is basic and decent Free Wifi is decent. Cuts out when transporting between resorts. Sand buggy experience was great. Make sure to bring a face covering to protect from dust. Like a bandana. They charge $60 usd for the professional photos they take Beach is just okay, I’m not a beach expert though Unfortunately, could not do water sport activities due to windy weather. As soon as you get the chance to do one, do it CONS The afterhours party at hacienda is okay but if you’re fun people, you can have fun anywhere. The singer is great and the drunker people love the DJ. Partying is not for me and I heard from hardcore partiers that it is boring Mini golf is one hole, people take turns. It is VERY underwhelming No staff to help at basketball courts during day. Was looking forward to playing but it was HOT so I didn’t mind sitting that out Definitely more of a family resort
Large resort with lots to do for all ages!
Pillows were tiny, blankets were thin. Double room was comfortable for me and my 20 something daughter. Infinity pool was perfect and pool activities were great. Bar and meal services were excellent. The beaches were lovely and could walk along. Some rocky areas but some Sandy areas as well. Activities at the main pool were fun and evening entertainment as well. Especially the silent disco! Guest services were very helpful in booking dining for each night in advance. We were able to take advantage of all the dining options around the entire resort. We’re not impressed with the Mexican restaurant which was buffet. Would have preferred ordering something unique off a full service menu. Staff was very kind and friendly and helpful. We had an incident on the property one night and the medical staff was caring and accommodating and provided professional medical services. Checked in to make sure ok the next day as well. Did not pressure to go to hospital off resort. We went on one organized group excursion to go on catamaran to a coral reef to snorkel /swim then sail back. They served a delicious lunch and beverages. It was excellent and we would highly recommend it!
Just back from two wonderful weeks. Re the renovations - our block was very close to the blocks that were fenced off for renovations. Yes, there was a bit of noise from the construction, but we couldn't hear it from in our room and it didn't carry to any of the public areas, so wasn't an issue. Only slight inconvenience was not being able to use the quickest routes to walk across the resorts. Upside was that with several blocks out of use we found there was always plenty of space available around the pools. We spent most of our pool time around the quiet pool or on the loungers just up at the edge of beach where there was a really nice constant breeze. Could do with a few more umbrellas around the pool, but there were always beds with palapas available on the beach. We spent one afternoon at the infinity pool but didn't return - don't know if it was just the day we were there, but there were several very loud and drunk groups whooping and hollering and shouting obscenties with guys vying to be the centre of attention. Each to their own - we probably were just too sober at the point to appreciate it :D The buffets generally were fine, and we always found something to eat. The buffet at Sian Ka'an we found to be better than those at the other sites in terms of selection and quality. We ate at several of the a la carte restaurants, the vast majority of which were excellent in terms of service and food. Our favourites were all at Tulum - Don Pablo, Tequila and Le Grand Tortugua. The food at Thali was also very tasty - I had the Thali taster, and whilst the flavours were excellent unfortunately the lamb in the rogan josh was mostly gristle and inedible - hopefully was just a one off as have only read good things about it otherwise. The exception was Mashua at Coba. We were booked to eat there at 9pm as we had been out during the day. When we arrived it was pretty quiet, and we were seated in a section being looked after by a waiter who only had one other table. We were sat waiting for almost 15 minutes before the waiter introduced himself and offered us water. A few minutes later we put in our food and drink order. After 25 minutes I popped out for a cigarette and the waiter was outside the restaurant chatting away on his phone. I came back in and we waited another 10 minutes. By this point the waiter had returned but was chatting to some of the other staff across the restaurant. Having still not even received our drinks orders almost 40 minutes after arriving, and wanting to catch the buffet before it closed we cut our losses and left. Very disappointing. The evening shows we watched were all great and really good quality for hotel entertainment. We saw one paid show which was Origen at Tulum - well worth the money. Silent Disco was lots of fun, as was karaoke in the Sports Bar. Decent air con was lacking in most of the restaurants and bars, so would recommend taking a fan if you struggle with the heat. Air con in the rooms was great. We had a standard room and after reading comments about them being dated we were really pleasantly surprised - there was nothing in the room in any state of disrepair and the room was spacious and comfortable. Housekeeping were excellent. Fridge top up service was hit and miss - sometimes several days with no top up. After mentioning this to one of the team it did improve and the fridge was topped up most days. We used room service a couple of times. Once we ordered for delivery right before we wanted to eat and it arrived quickly - we had pizza and cesar salad and both were really nice. We ordered room service in advance for 11 am on our last day so we could eat just before checking out. Unfortunately this didn't arrive by the time we had to leave our room just before 11.30. We left the resort a few times - we booked trips to Chichen Itza and Xel Ha both direct through the Xcaret website in advance. No complaints about these at all and would highly recommend. Having seen how close Xel Ha was to the hotel we didn't book the optional transport at $22 per person, instead taking the collectivo which was quick and easy and 30 pesos per person each way. We also took the collectivo to Playa del Carmen on another day which again was quick and easy and 45 pesos each way. All in all a fantastic holiday, and this hotel offers excellent value for money. Definitely want to return to Mexico at some point to visit some of the sites we didn't get round to seeing this time around, and would probably choose to stay nearer to Cancun just for a change of scenery, but would not hesitate in coming back to this hotel if wanting to revisit the same area. Hope this is helpful and happy to answer any questions :)
Lovely resort. Too bad about the obnoxious guests
My husband and I returned for a weeks stay. Our room was in the adult only building of akumal. They had a very lovely banner on the door for our anniversary and a bottle of bubbly and chocolates. The room was spacious and clean. The resort is massive with many trolleys to take you around. There is always something to do! The service was wonderful and the food was quite good. The only issues we had were outside managements control: the beach is rocky and full of sargassum (they work endlessly at it!) and many many drunk, rude entitled guests. We have been to many all inclusives and this one was an eye opener! As akumal guests, we enjoyed using the facilities at sian kaan. We suggest their breakfast buffet. Very good!
