Jan 19, 2025The best resort we've been to in Mexico
The people, the service, the facilities and the pools were all great. We stayed in one of the unrenovated rooms and it was just fine. Villas 86 and 87 next to the infinity pool are great locations. The sheltered lagoons off the beach have some of the best snorkeling I've seen off a resort beach. And the food, wow! The buffets. snack bars, and a la carte restaurants were all amazing. I can't imagine going anywhere else now in the Maya Rivera.

Fantastic Stay at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal
Just returned after a week at the Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal with my wife. This is a fantastic resort with a fantastic staff. Everything was exceptional - the food ( a la carts but especially the buffet), The pools, the entertainment, the beach. Everything was clean and well maintained. Manuel and Miguel at the pool bar were fantastic. Hard working and always eager to please. Maya on the entertainment staff went out of her way to include us in the many activities she organized. The Rock City and Back to the 80's shows were excellent, but the shining star was the performance of Frozen by children of guests guided by the obviously capable staff of the kids camp. I am sure many of these young stars will consider this as their first step to an amazing career. Transportation to and from other resorts in the group, and around the grounds was simple by just jumping on one of the many electric shuttle vehicles. The presence of little critters in their natural habitat was very entertaining and the grounds had a beautiful balance of natural forest and manicured grounds. The beach provided options for sheltered wading, or open swimming. (Bring swimming shoes to protect your feet from the natural coral). Lots of beach to walk from Akumal to the Grand Tulum property. Check in and check out were effortless, and Air Canada Vacations did an awesome job with the transfers to and from the resort. Only two slightly negative comments. The steps into the main pool have an overhanging lip which shortens the first stair tread into the water. We saw several guests fall when they slipped off the first step entering the pool. No issue if you are aware of it, but most were not. Second, the resort seems to be very stingy with the mini-bar. Even leaving tips in the fridge did not result in more than 2 beer left per day. (Sometimes we like to have a beverage in the room on a break from the sun or getting ready for supper). A call to room service would get prompt delivery of cold beer, but no more than 2 per guest per day. We would highly recommend this resort and expect to return. we had a great time. One note on the Cancun airport. No problems with check in or security, but once you clear security, be prepared for some serious gouging. All water taps are labeled non-potable and a 500ml bottle of water starts at about $6.00 US. A bag of Chips or a bag of candy is pretty much $10.00 US, and if you want to have a bite of lunch and a beer, be ready for a $70 US bill for a couple on a lite lunch.

Jan 18, 2025Had a good time but not as good as I hoped.
I was really looking forward to this trip and as much as I enjoyed Mexico and the people I was left quite disappointed. Firstly I must say the people were fantastic, very friendly and always smiling. The food from the main buffet was really good with a great selection of seafood,meat,vegetarian options and lovely deserts, the only issue was waiting in the queue for the meat to be cooked if you wanted it fresh, it was the same in the morning for omelettes with only one person cooking them. I did get boiling hot pasta sauce poured across my hand although it was an accident, the girl serving was busy messing about and laughing with her colleague too notice what she was doing and then laughed after she did it. The external restaurants were always booked and we only manage to get into the seafood and the Mexican, even though we were trying to book from the first day of our arrival. Onto the rooms, I will say they were clean and well looked after by the maid but they were not good, the bathroom was so dated it looked like something from the 80s. My shower never worked and didn’t have enough pressure so it was always switching back to the bath tap and literally dripped out of the shower head. The temperature never stayed the same and I had to keep adjusting it while it managed to work and had to jump from underneath as it would just switch to boiling hot in a second. We did report the fault and that the second shower head bracket was broken so we couldn’t use that either, they fixed that by using tape! Our friends that went with us had to be moved on the first night as the room was infested with cockroaches and a broken bed! Good food good people but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Exceptional
We go to Mexico every winter and stay in different cities and various resorts. They have all been very nice, we just enjoy experiencing different places. This is the first resort that we loved so much that we may return! We had a group of 4, with 2 rooms in the adult only section of luxury Akumal. We were all very impressed. Everything was exceptional; but the restaurants were outstanding. We’ve never had such good food at an all inclusive resort. I highly recommend making reservations for the week as soon as you arrive. The resort was also one of the cleanest we have stayed at. No dirty cups lying around, no litter. It was noticeably cleaner than most. The beaches are just ok. The location of the resort is not on white powder beaches (like Cancun or Playa). It was rocky and shallow. Barely swimmable, but you can get out there to wade in the ocean safely. While we went to restaurants at some of the adjacent resorts, we didn’t see much other than what we saw from the trolly ride. I highly recommend Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal. It was fantastic. We will be returning :)

I’m not going to leave a detailed review about our room because I think our dissatisfaction with our room is an anomaly with this resort. The resort is typically very clean, the food is absolutely amazing, the beaches are extremely well-maintained, staff is attentive and quick to respond. This time around our room was not very clean upon arrival, and there were some things broken, and I seem to have ended up with a whole lot of bug bites not attributed to an open door or being outside. In hindsight, I should have spoken to the staff and asked to be moved. I’m not particularly savvy with doing that, so the fault is my own. We love this resort, and do plan to return. This time, however, we will request another area for our room assignment.
