5* experience - don’t let the reviews put you off!

This hotel is definitely 5 stars! We loved the adults only vibe- as a couple in our twenties everyday we were either at a pool party, silent disco, cocktail or dance classes, and silent discos. The entertainment was fantastic and due to the size of the resort (the biggest resort I have ever been to), if you wanted to relax in the quiet pools and watch sophisticated entertainment one day that was great, but the next day you could be at the foam party singing karaoke with total strangers. The hotel had a mix of guests but catered for all of us which we loved. We booked this holiday through TUI, who a day later downgraded the hotel to 4+ on their site. This hotel provides far more amenities than TUI advertise. Aquamarine guests have access to around ten different restaurants, including a live cooking show in a Japanese restaurant. The restaurants include a cocktail on arrival, an initial taster dish, starter, a main and dessert. These meals would cost £100+ each in the UK so great value. The hotel provides a free golf cart service, so buggies transport you from reception to your restaurants, the theatres, the beach etc. If you book an excursion- the $65 adventure boogies were great value. You get picked up from the hotel, 1 hour off road buggy driving, a natural pool swim, coffee/chocolate tasting, and an indigenous show all included. It’s one of the best things we’ve ever done, we cannot recommend enough. We booked this through Raul who is the rep but we had no idea how much we could do on the trip! The snorkelling boat excursions through Scubaquatics on the beach were great and for £45 included snorkelling activities, sightseeing and food and drink (3/4 hours). You see the dolphins on the tour so don’t bother booking that experience it’s a rip off! The rooms are spacious, with four poster beds, jacuzzi baths, rain showers, balconies and views. They have a mini fridge which they stock daily (with water, Pepsi, etc) and an umbrella in the wardrobe for when it rains. The staff are fantastic- particularly good when you tip. The guy who makes the fried eggs at breakfast was fantastic. The best places to try are Maiko, MEAT, Garden Grill and Portofino (Italian). The others were good but not 5* experiences in comparison. The guys who do aqua classes are hilarious and so good at their job. The pool/bar/entertainment staff are hardworking, polite and generally fabulous. The only downsides I would say were the service varies hugely between restaurants. Again with tipping, you will only get priority if you tip well (except at the buffet, they treat everyone the same which is great). You need to book restaurants a week in advance as we didn’t get to try all of them. The hotel is huge and very safe, with barriers to get in and out via coach, but book excursions through your travel agent as the surrounding island is not safe. Some of the other reviews on here are ridiculous- if you book the DR, you will get some mosquitoes, just bring bug spray. We only had a couple of bites to be honest. The staff also can’t control the tropical weather. Through TUI January sale we paid just £1100 each for 11 days (including flights), which if you take the cost of those off, we probably paid £700 to the hotel… These days you would pay that for four days bed and breakfast in London. This averages £60 a day which is sensational value. In comparison, a 5* in Tenerife with far less amenities averages double that per day. This was the best holiday we’ve ever been on and as a couple in our 20’s we loved everything about this trip. We will definitely come again.

    Great trip

I would give 4.5/5: good facilities ( gym, pool, tennis, ping pong). A plus is easy selection of restaurants for each night: food is excellent @ The Greek, Portofino, El Olivo, Limbo, MEAT. Rodizio is not great, ( No AC so too hot to enjoy, food is dry and service is spotty), Thali 's food is so, so ( but service great).Buffet does offer seafood, but selection is not as good compared to Bavaro ( I went in to look but not to eat). Desserts are the same every day and cakes are to be improved. Fruits are same also daily. Beach is beautiful, we were lucky, there was seaweed only the first 2 days, then completely cleared after The huge complex of Bahia Principe makes walking a good exercise Overall, I would return, and advice : buffet could be improved

Beautiful place but not so friendly staff

Overall good experience at the aquamarine. Stayed for two weeks from England family of 2 couples of 2. Overall I don’t feel this hotel is as good as the riu hotels but it was nice to try something different for once and Bahia was overall a good place to stay. Restaurants and food were overall good. Buffet you really can’t go wrong it’s always excellent service in there it’s cool and clean and always lots of choice. The most favourite restaurants was the limbo, mashua, the Japanese and the worst was the Greek, we actually spoke to a couple who walked out of the Greek because the portions were that poor. The whole feel of the restaurant and the food served cold really put us off, also had really bad belly’s too after this which put us off. Food at the pool was nice always fresh burgers crisps salad or nachos. The lady at the pool bar for food was always seeming very miserable and a couple of times I qued for my food was greeted and given a plate and knives and forks and then to get to the hut to be told “no more” even though other people were getting served. Poor English from a lot of staff which is ok but I can’t help but feel they really didn’t want to know us, not very friendly at all as we are quite a friendly family tried having a joke and a laugh but a lot of staff wasn’t having none of it, the overall feel from the staff there in majority was that they couldn’t really be arsed and seemed pissed off with their jobs half the time. Tipping staff we felt deserved it a few times took a tip to the lobby with me and the service was that rude I walked away with it still in my hand I honestly didn’t feel they wanted to serve me. Drinks were so hit and miss, one minute you could have a gin and tonic next they would give a gin and soda, never was the drinks right when we ordered them from the pool bar multiple times we would ask for a certain drinks to be told no not today, then see someone else walking past with that exact drink, cocktails seemed to be a massive hinderance for them and even eyes rolling when asking for something like a pina colada or chocolate maritini. Many times ran out of ice and also ran out of beer one day, the service at the beach bar was the worst as it was really slow and always a huge que to get a drink, very watery drinks too especially a Diet Coke tasted like pure water Entertainment staff were good always up dancing and having fun, we didn’t see them too much as we was on beach a lot but always were happy and smiling. The others guests seemed to be the problem twice during our stay someone was sick in the swim up pool bar leaving it closed for two days, two different occasions this was. the sick wasn’t taken out straight away and left over night we saw cockroaches eating this at midnight on both nights this happened, very gross. Shuttle busses were a problem, always been told no to aquamarine by the drivers but would take other guests to their hotels, even if bus was empty sometimes wouldn’t let us on the bus, I didn’t mind walking but my dads hip has just been done and he struggled walking. If you did manage to get on a shuttle bus you were pushed out of the way by the greedy Americans who literally would run on the bus before it even got around the roundabout to the bus stop giving you no chance to have your turn. I would be here all day if I explained the amount of times someone pushed their way in front of me this holiday, more frustrating when the staff turn a blind eye and serve them anyway. Lobby bar on a night if you aren’t American, wrecked or a big boisterous group could take 20 minutes to get a drink you could stand and wait your turn and still not get served this got really frustrating. As we are from England we like to que and wait our turn but unfortunately this wasn’t the same for everyone, arms reaching over you at the buffet was a common occurrence too people really enjoyed pushing in, pure greed from a lot of guests there and they really didn’t care. Went out on a kayak fell off the kayak after been told to not go in the water as it was too choppy and dangerous, couldn’t get back on for the life of us and not a single person came to help, panicking in the deep water my mum was shouting for someone to help and no body came, shout out to the man (a guest random on the beach) who came to rescue us and help us back on the boat. Saw this happen multiple times and the lifeguard on beach was sat on his phone which was great. POSITIVES Juan at the beach was a super star we absolutely loved Juan, if everyone was like Juan the place would be a palace. So friendly and helpful I can’t praise him enough! The beach was stunning I’ve never seen a beach so fantastic no pictures we saw before hand did this beach justice it was stunning. Take bread from buffet into the sea waist height and feed the fishes it was so interesting also the ducks on the way to the beach there were also Turtles in here. Three pools and another pool with jacuzzi in but only saw one of 4 working so didn’t get to use them. This was a visibly beautiful place and we did enjoy our holiday as it’s what you make it but this holiday more than any other Caribbean holiday just felt different as I didn’t really feel welcomed like we have other hotels and felt most staff didn’t want to serve you.

    Poor service and bugs!

I recently visited the Bahia Principe Aquamarine for a bachelorette party. This trip was organized by a travel agent. Unfortunately my experience at this resort was horrible. I was only away for 4 days, 3 nights and I had to change rooms twice. To begin, our toilet wasn’t working. Luckily, someone came to fix. However, it broke again and wouldn’t flush. This time, the repairman worked for over an hour then stated that he couldn’t fix it until the next day and left. My roommates and I then went to the lobby to explain the situation, as we cannot go that long without a functioning toilet. Thankfully, we got a new room. But, this new room was covered with bugs. There were little mites/ants crawling over all of the wooden surfaces in the room. The bathroom also had insects in it. We immediately went back to the lobby to request a new room. Sadly, we were not met with good service. The man at the desk was cold and not concerned. He did not offer updates or assistance as we were left sitting in the lobby for over an hour, waiting for a new room at 1:00am. This new room was better, but still not great as it had hair and stains in the shower. We were told that we would be able to meet with the manager the next day to discuss the issues, but this never happened. Finally, upon our return home, my roommate discovered many insect bites on her that were itchy and hot. She sought medical attention and was informed that they are bed bug bites. We have tried contacting the hotel, but are met with excuses and no true solution. Lastly, all three of our rooms had showers that would only have HOT water. The water temperature was too hot to take a proper shower. On a positive note, i would like to shout out the staff at the lobby bar. They were always welcoming and friendly.

Do not recommend going here at all!

Overall I am shocked at reading positive reviews! I just got home yesterday and I am very thankful for the group of girls that came as we made our own fun for my cousins Bachelorette. However this hotel was not a 5 star at most I would give it is a 2 star, I would label it a 3 star with me being extremely kind and nice. I assure you to not ever go to this resort! I also assured our travel agent and others to never send anyone to this resort. The staff were very rude! I approached the bar at night asking for water to be filled in my steel cooler cup after I was given it and tipped the man; he told me to not come back and waved his hand so I did not go to that bar again. I will say the lobby bar staff were amazing totally different experience. The food was horrible! I got the runs the whole trip. Now the worst situation was regarding our room or I should say our rooms. I had to switch my room three times; this all occurred in one day so you can imagine my frustration as I could not enjoy my last night especially in Punta Cana. The first our toilet broke twice; both times the toilet wouldn't flush. The first time the repairman fixed the toilet after we waited more than 3 hours for it to be fixed. The second time the repair man came and told us it could not be fixed after being in our room for I would say 2-3 hours and left the room. I was not going to stay in a room where the toilet was broken as I had the runs. So I told the girls to pack up and we went into the lobby looking for a new second room before it got to late and we were to tired. Now this was a situation getting a new room, I had to get my friend who spoke Spanish to assist as the front desk man could not help us without him or someone who spoke the language maybe since it was super late at night, i'm not sure if they only keep bilingual staff during day hours. This took at least an hour to get a new room, our second room. Once we got to the room, I started to notice bugs! I thought I killed them all so I finally went to hangout with the girls. Once I returned to the room I noticed the bugs multiplied like crazy. They were all over the walls, bed, table and washroom floor. I immediately told them let's get our luggage and go back to the lobby; this was around 12am, my spanish friend was sleeping so I tried google translate as we ran into a language barrier again. This worker kept us waiting in the lobby till at least 2:30am. By this time getting the room at 2:30am we all were exhausted. The girls went to bed but I needed to shower as I was so itchy from the bug bites which I have been told after going to the clinic today it is bed bugs along with mosquito bites all over my body. As I was taking a shower I noticed the maid did not clean the shower as hair was left on the wall. This was the worst vacation resort I have been to in my whole life! Our last night at 2:30am once we got our third room; I was told by the employee using google translate I was needing to come to the lobby in the morning to speak with the manager who will apologize and do something to fix this experience for myself. I came twice to the lobby and waited for the manager till the moment I hopped onto the cart to take us to the bus to leave to come to Canada but nothing happened... No manager and no conversation. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! The wifi is terrible at the resort as well it is very choppy and cuts in and out all the time if your trying to post a photo to social media you find yourself posting the same photo 2 or more times. Now the room service is not existent, if you want drinks you need to get them before midnight or anything you want you have to come pick it up at the lobby front desk. We had so many issues trying to get water delivered to the front door of our room as there was not enough in the fridge. They only give you 3 small water bottles. We were told you get access to all the resorts on the premise but we tried going to a different buffet and I was not allowed in so that was another lie… and another bad experience. Our travel agent has been amazing handling the issues we have faced I would recommend her again and will use her for my future trips!
