Spotlight on La Romana, Dominican Republic
Visit Saona Island
Saona Island’s white sand beaches, turquoise waters and shady palm trees are the epitome of a Caribbean oasis. An entertaining catamaran ride from mainland La Romana will get you to this beautiful island, where you can work on your tan, have fun playing beach volleyball or go for a swim. There’s a natural swimming pool in the middle of the ocean nearby, where you can see starfish and other sea creatures through the clear water. Before you head back to La Romana, make sure to take a stroll along the sand to wrap up your incredible island experience.
Play at the best golf course in the Caribbean
La Romana is home to the famous Teeth of the Dog golf course. Designed by world-renowned designer Pete Dye, the course is the No. 1 golf course in the Caribbean (ranked by Golf Magazine). The beautiful greens are surrounded by gorgeous scenery, accented by the towering cliffs jutting into the ocean. Ever since the course opened in 1971, La Romana’s been a boom town for travelers in search of the best golf experience.
The Cave of Wonders
When you visit La Romana, you have to visit Cueva de las Maravillas (Cave of Wonders)–a path of underground caverns that features original drawings from the native people of the island of Hispaniola before it was settled by Christopher Columbus. Part of the cave insides have been remodeled to accommodate visitors, but many of the original stalagmites and stalactites are still there to give you a true vision of history.
Altos de Chavón
Altos de Chavón Village is a re-creation of a 16th century Mediterranean style European village, and one of the most popular attractions in La Romana–complete with a cultural center, an archeological museum and an amphitheater. When you stroll through the cobblestone paths, you might come across artisans and street performers, but the vintage romantic look of the village alone is worth the effort. Make sure to browse the art galleries and shops along the way, and stop at an eatery for a good meal.
