Special Thank You to the Ritz Carlton Kapalua Staff
My family of four had booked a stay at the RC Kapalua from 8/4 to 8/9. The first four days were wonderful as you'd expect from a beautiful Ritz Carlton property. Then on the 5th day, all hell broke loose in west Maui as wild fires burned down the historic town of Lahaina. The winds from Hurricane Dora and the fires knocked out electricity, phone, cellular and internet services. The situation became dire as all local businesses and food services shut down, roads leaving the area were closed, and the lone local gas station ran out of fuel. The nearby Kanapali hotels did not have running water as their plumbing was run off electric pumps. Guests of these hotels underwent a mandatory evacuation at 3:30 AM on 8/9 and simply told to "head north" as the southbound roads were closed. Likewise, life at the RC changed considerably on 8/8 beginning with the pool shut down due to a lack of electricity to power the filtration system. This was followed by a lack of hot water from the faucets but thankfully the water and toilets continued to run. Maid services ceased as well as towel/linen cleaning. We had a buffet dinner from food prepared for the cancelled luau that evening with basic rationed meals the following day. A world class resort transformed into a highly functioning shelter for its guests overnight. Many decisions were being made with extremely limited information as the phone and internet were down. The minimal information they had was from speaking to staff or guests who had driven into the community at points throughout the day and reporting on road conditions/closures, progress on fire containment and power line repair. News was spread through old fashioned "word of mouth". What stood out most in these unprecedented circumstances was the RC staff who exhibited amazing calm under enormous pressure. I was speaking to a valet at 6 AM on 8/9 (I regrettably can't remember his name). He mentioned that he was evacuated from his Lahaina home very early that same morning and still came to work. I saw him answering questions about road conditions and sharing news of the fire with guests in addition to the usual car services. Like the valet, I knew many of the staff had personally been affected by this disaster and still made the choice to show up and take care of hundreds of resort guests. By the end of the day, I could clearly see weariness on many of their faces but there was no wavering in their commitment to caring for us. We left the property late afternoon on 8/9 as the staff informed us the northern road was open and flowing in one direction. We went straight to the airport without any traffic on this remote road which was very unexpected. I was expecting a throng of cars and a 4-hour drive that normally took 1.5 hrs. We are now awaiting flights to leave for the mainland in the next couple days. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I can't thank the RC staff enough for taking such great care of us in spite of their personal hardships. There was a lot of anxiety among the resort guests but no one was outright panicked because of the poise and compassion demonstrated by the hotel staff. We were so saddened to see Maui hit with a generational disaster but fully expect to visit this resort again in happier days. In the meantime, we will be praying for (and certainly donating monetarily to) Maui's relief and recovery. RC staff, I pray that God blesses you beyond the many ways you have blessed my family and other guests during this difficult time.

Kindness and compassion. Incredible staff and generosity.
We were not guests of the ritz but we experienced incredible generosity and kindness as we were fleeing wildfires. They provided free breakfast to locals and tourists who were fleeing and trying to stay safe, cooking using backup generators. At this point we had been without hot food for a while as there was no power and we were scared and hungry. They allowed us to use their grounds to eat and recoup and kept working on new batches of brewed coffee. Their staff comforted and provided the scarce updates they had, all with a smile, kindness and professionalism. I was deeply touched. Even though it is outside of our price range, we will save up to stay at a ritz on a future vacation.

Beautiful
The hotel grounds is beautiful. Our room was spacious and comfortable. The walk to the beach was a bit long but the privacy on the beach was great! The water was so clear that we saw a few turtles. The staff were very friendly and polite. Although pricey, it was worth the stay for the most beautiful views

Great li’au at Kapalua
I’ve been to my share of lu’aus, fine dining experiences and enjoyable musical events. This lu’au was a combination of all the above. The entertainment, talk story and featured and background music ( the same duo) were outstanding! The food was’over-the-top’. People at my table, from Texas, said it tasted nothing like lu’au food of the past. They said, “ It will take a lot to top this night.” I second that statement. This was, by far the best lu’au I have ever attended - both food and entertainment wise. I plan on sharing with anyone who wants to attend a lu’au that this one is the one to see. Forget the price! Most lu’aus cost about the same as this one. This was a dinner and show, with very fine service, made this a night I’ll remember a long long time.

Ritz Carlton Luau a Five Star experience
Best Luau experience on Maui. We have attended several. Hyatt Regency, Westin and Sheraton Luau’s on Maui and other islands. The Ritz Carlton buffet is the best of any luau on any island. Everything is included: pictures, flower lei, activities, tips, bar, etc. The MC for the show is wonderful. The show is different than some of the others. It focuses primarily on Hawaii so you don’t get the flavor of some of the other Polynesian islands. The pavilion is covered so the hot sun and rain isn’t an issue. It’s not by the water but beautiful location. I am surprised they didn’t include ceiling fans. It can get hot with everyone. Love the seating of big square tables with comfortable cushioned chairs. The only other luau that compares for a great show is the Marriott Ko Olina on Oahu (food and lies are more basic).
