Terrible food, beautiful resort
This resort was beautiful and the beach was stunning. The rooms were basic and clean. However, I went with family and at least four of us got seriously food poisoned. Even if that had not happened, my rating of the food would have been poor. Everything is warm not hot, clearly not cooked fresh. Most of the resort is buffet and the restaurants that serve food seem to just heat it up and serve it. We went to the Asian restaurant, Jade, right when it opened only to find out it was buffet only. The food had just been laid out, yet it was only warm and tasted old. Nearly half of our week long trip was spent stuck in our rooms violently ill. We could not eat or drink anything. On top of that, there is no room service so if you are sick you are on your own. I am incredibly disappointed with the food on this resort. To have been food poisoned caused us to spend hundreds of dollars a day stuck inside the room, not able to eat or drink--something you pay for at an all inclusive. We are out hundreds of dollars and several days in the sun as a result of the lack of food safety at this resort. I also really disliked the fact that the bars and restaurants only have qr codes--even the swim up bar. Prepare to be glued to your phone if you want to order anything here. We did complain to the front desk and we were told a manager would contact us--but no one did. Very unimpressed. Pros: stunning beach, clean resort Cons: stale food, lacking food safety, poor entertainment, no room service

Lovely staff and immaculate hotel
Hotel was immaculately clean. Staff were fab - always helpful and friendly. Had some difficulty to start with a room move as elderly family member couldnt manage stairs and we were allocated top floor. Then took two days to find a pop-up bed for youngest child (which was provided in initial room) - simply took two days to move it from one room to another which was a bit unecessary. Reiterated to reception staff member who seemed uninterested in resolving. Waited for a different staff member then got it resolved! Only real downside to the hotel and was a disappointing start to the trip. However, the waiting staff, bar staff, room cleaners were all fabulous and excelled. Food was varied and we always found something different. No complaints here. Room was spacious and tidy and clean. Again no complaints. Night-time entertainment a little repetitive but we ended up going to Riu Tequila nearby where it was a little more varied and better enjoyment. All in all - a lovely hotel and would consider a return in the future.

Great Place
Everything great from top to bottom. Surprise free upgrade to one of there few "Ocean Front" rooms. It was a nice touch. A couple of minor suggestions for the management. Plant a few brightly coloured flower beds or large pots along the main walkway. I could design these for you.😊 Start your nightly entertainment slightly earlier. We a bit older folks tend to nod off early after a day in the sun with ample food and drinks consumed.🥴 Return prospects: highly likely. Enjoy people.

Simple, yet fun vacation!
My husband and I went for our anniversary. First time travelling without our children! Upon arrival we were greeted from hotel staff, directed to check in counter and offered a delicious drink while we got checked in. Check in was super easy and zero issues. Our room was beautiful and located in the 3rd building on the second floor. Total of 4 buildings. Room: Very clean, modern, and simple. Our maid was Natalia and she was truly wonderful. We left her a daily tip and some different chocolates / treats we brought from home. She appreciated that very much as our service was awesome! We needed extra pillows, she got them right away. There was never anything missing in our room that we needed. Stocked daily with fresh towels, toilet paper, and mini fridge too. Her designs on the bed added that little touch of how much she truly appreciated what was given to her. Food: There are 4 different al la carte restaurants, one breakfast buffet, one dinner buffet and snack bar beside the pools. Tip: All al la carts you need your phone to scan the bar code to get their menu. You do NOT need reservations for any of the al la cartes. However if you are a large group then suggest speaking to them the day before. Mexican al la carte: delicious! Nothing negative to say about it Italian al la carte: it was good, I wouldn’t say anything extra special the other then a few dishes you may not get in the buffet area. I definitely think that this could use some improvement on the menu choice however food was good. Japanese: very similar to my review on the Italian one. Nothing extra special in there, sushi was available, not a lot of variety and not many different types of Japanese food offered, same as buffet. This could also use some improvement. Steakhouse: We loved our first visit to the steak house! My husband had the mushroom burger and I had the 10 maybe 12oz steak and that was cooked to perfection and sooo good! We enjoyed the food so much, we went back a second time and the servers in there were very attentive. They could however invest in some better steak knives it was very difficult to cut the food. Buffet: your average all you can eat buffet. Food was very good and cooked well. No complaints about food. Servers: I do have to say the servers were not very attentive in the buffet area. Fernando: There was a server that really stood out and deserves recognition for all the effort and hard work he put into serving not only us but his entire area. His friendly and happy/positive attitude made you want to be there and just made you feel so good! He was quick to clean/remove the plates. Offered you a drink at the very moment of seating, and was just very courteous the entire meal. We sat in his area when we’re at the buffet because we just really enjoyed his positive energy. Swim up pool bar: adults only pool, spent most of our time there and a few servers there deserve major recognition. Rosa, Uli, Leonardo, Moises, Javier were impeccable serves and SO MUCH FUN! (That’s not the alcohol talking, they are just awesome) Entertaining and fun! Great vibes!! Entertainment: I say this could definitely improve. It’s not horrible but it wasn’t entertaining enough to want to stay and continue to watch for most nights. To be honest I had more fun watching the kids version of the show a lot more! Just a personal opinion though. The entertainment team is wonderful I just feel like they could improve and come up with fresh/new ideas for night shows. Beach: very clean, and nicely maintained water dips down very quickly but that’s not something that can be controlled. All in all if your looking for a clean and nice place I’d def go back again.

Another great december break !
Back to Riu Playacar for 16 nights from 10th December. Having a quiet room with kingsize bed in block 4 , facing jungle. First week clouds and some big showers, but temperature still good. Most of the time we spent around beach and pools , loved to join yoga, beach games and parties. Animation team did a great job ! ( this year for us far the best team since we are guests in this hotel) not pushing and working all so hard to entertain all the guests. As we had enough choices at the buffet and we love to eat outside we did not use a-la-carte. Christmas dinner was over the top, too much choises ,beautiful decorations and great atmosphere ! Night time was different, some shows where great to watch (mexican/latin), other not so our thing(abba/queen). Sometimes we found the music at the theater a bit to loud, you even can hear it too much when playing a card game in the other bar. White party is the best ! Neon party was different music and less atmosphere for us. Playa del Carmen is a nice walk and a taxi back after shopping and walking. We will not mention any staff member in person as all employees are doing a great job (cleaners/gardeners/ bartenders etc.) We come back because of the variety of nationalities, the atmosphere, the great staff and the cleanness of the property. Countdown started to go back in December !
