Situated on the Fox River, this picturesque small town was the childhood home of Harry Houdini. Today it’s known mainly as the center of the region’s paper industry and the home of Lawrence University’s 84-acre campus. For recreation, there’s the nearby Fox River Trail, stretching 25 miles from Green Bay to Calumet County. In summer, Appleton hosts the popular Art in the Park showcase; in winter, its annual Christmas Parade is not to be missed.
